San Jose State Spartan Men’s Golf Celebrates 70th year as Host of the Transamerica-WFG Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club

San Jose, CA– On April 11-13 top men’s collegiate golf teams will vie for the coveted championship trophy at the 70th annual Transamerica-World Financial Group (WFG) Western Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Held at the nationally-ranked Pasatiempo Golf Club (Santa Cruz, CA), this popular collegiate golf tournament is hosted by San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartan Men’s Golf.

Once again, the award-winning Pasatiempo Golf Club (best-known for its magnificent Alister MacKenzie design) serves as the perfect venue for the Western Intercollegiate, one of the longest-running men’s golf championships in the U.S.

According to Tournament Director John Kennaday, SJSU men’s golf coach, 14 teams will compete this year, with seven currently ranked in the top-30 nationally (GolfStat-Mar 16). The 2016 field includes Southern California, (#1), Arizona State (#6), Stanford (#9), California (#16), San Diego State (#24), Washington (#28), Oregon (#30), as well as UCLA, Pepperdine, UTEP, Hawaii, Arizona, UC Irvine, and host team San Jose State University.

While the Western name hints at a regional flair, there are teams from six states including Texas and Hawaii. Players from these 14 teams represent 15 countries: United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and Australia—making the Western a truly international event.

“We are extremely proud to host the Western Intercollegiate, especially now, as the championship enters its 7oth year,” said SJSU Men’s Golf Coach John Kennaday. “Spartan Men’s Golf continues to hold plenty of fond memories from its many years of competitive play at Pasatiempo. And now, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Western, I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge some of the fine players whose names are etched on the championship trophy. Names like Johnny Miller, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O’ Meara, Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, and Patrick Rodgers, as well as Spartan alums Arron Oberholser, John Lotz, Mark Lye, and the late, and great, Mr. Ken Venturi.”

The 70th anniversary of the Western Intercollegiate will mark the return of the three-day, 54-hole tournament (18-18-18) format instead of 36-18. The 18-18-18 format was in place at the Western Intercollegiate for many years until a NCAA rule change impacted the maximum number of competition days for college golfers.

The tournament is open to the public with no charge for admission and golf enthusiasts are welcome to join the walking gallery. Parking is free and available on site (in any of the three designated lots) on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In addition to dedicated Title Sponsor Transamerica-WFG, the Western Intercollegiate has the support of platinum sponsors Open, Cooper-Challen Realty, Brandenburg Family Foundation, and Don & Sally Lucas. The official 2016 hotel partner is Hotel Paradox, located nearby in downtown Santa Cruz, CA.

“We are extremely happy to host the Western Intercollegiate at our club,” said Pasatiempo’s PGA General Manager Scott Hoyt, a SJSU Spartan Men’s Golf alum, who competed in the championship during his collegiate days. “Each year our members and guests look forward to watching these young, talented collegiate players as they compete for the title, here at Pasatiempo.”
