San Jose State Spartans Men’s Golf hosted the incredible 65th Annual Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament this April, where fifteen teams from top colleges and universities vied for the coveted title contested over 54-holes on the world-famed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Event success would not have prevailed without the support of many fine folks and organizations starting with Pasatiempo Golf Club, their members and staff. Add to that, the Northern California Golf Association, Santa Cruz Chapter of the SJSU Alumni Association, SJSU Athletics, SJSU Golf Team Alumni and supporters who volunteered their valuable time to make the 65th Western Intercollegiate everything it should be--an excellent test of golf for top collegiate golfers.
Despite a two-hour fog delay on Saturday, all 54 holes were completed by Sunday afternoon, a true testament to the dedicated staff and grounds crew at Pasatiempo GC.
The 3-day event brought plenty of stellar play, hundreds of spectators, phenomenal food & spirits, and a trail of new memories that add to the Western’s long and cherished history.
Champion Team honors were claimed by UCLA (their third win for the season) and WI medalist honors were proudly earned by New Mexico State (NMSU) senior Tim Madigan.
Reflecting back, it was an amazing weekend for the game and for us as event hosts from San Jose State.
Spartanite Mark Hubbard finished in second while teammate Jay Myers shot a final round low of 66. Overall, our SJSU Spartans handled Pasatiempo better than most.
A very special thanks is extended to our loyal sponsors: Lee Brandenburg & The Brandenburg Family Foundation, Don & Sally Lucas, Jerry Hamilton & Cooper-Challen Realty, Paul Decena & Planet Beach- a Contempo Spa, Terry Rose, Inc., Kirkorian Enterprises, James G. Jimenez, Christina La Monico, Brad Sargent, and Arron Oberholser.
Additionally, warm appreciation is extended to Mark Wishner with the Sun SafeTee Program, plus the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group and regional dermatologists, and tournament product sponsor SunDog Eyewear (distributed by AMA Golf) for their advocacy in the area of sun skin screening and protection.
We hope you’ll join us in 2012 when we return to the majestic Pasatiempo GC for the 66th Western Intercollegiate.
Yours in Golf,
John Kennaday
