UCLA picked up its third win of the 2010-11 season and first in the spring winning team honors and New Mexico State senior Tim Madigan left as the medalist at the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.
The Bruins, ranked third nationally in the April 13 GolfStat poll, topped a 15-team field that included nine top-30 ranked teams with a 1,066 team score on the picturesque and challenging par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. UCLA was the only team in the field with two-under par scores, one in the first and the other in second round building a 16-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes, the Bruins eight strokes ahead of crosstown rival #20-Southern California's 1,074.
NCAA defending champion Augusta State, ranked seventh nationally, and two-time Western Intercollegiate defending champion Oregon, ranked 26th, tied for third at 1,076. #7-San Diego State was fifth at 1,085. Host San Jose State was sixth at 1,087.
Tied for the lead at three-under par 137 with UCLA’s Pontus Widegren heading into the final 18 holes, Madigan posted an even par 70 with three birdies and three bogeys to finish at three-under par 207. Widegren shot a 73 to finish tied for fifth at even-par 210. Madigan was the only player in the 92-player field who matched or was under par for all three rounds.
San Jose State’s Mark Hubbard, Stanford’s Andrew Yun and Augusta State’s Patrick Reed tied for second at 209. Read more...
